THE SIGNAL
On 25 September 2026, the PTO published an expanded 2027 programme featuring 15 T50 Cup events and 15 T100 Challenger events.
What changed in September
The 25 September expansion added initial calendars of 15 T50 Cup races and 15 T100 Challenger races. The PTO’s release says 48 races are now in the 2027 programme, with further additions expected. It also says the announced T100 Challenger events come from Challenge Family, retaining their organisers and host cities.
The wider change was outlined on 24 July: the existing World Triathlon Championship Series will become the T50 championship tour, alongside a T100 championship tour. Both sit within the new Triathlon World Tour. The amateur implication is practical: familiar events may appear under unfamiliar labels when you start planning next year.

Read the label, then read the race
T50 and T100 Championship identify the top professional tier. The newly announced T50 Cup and T100 Challenger calendars sit below that level. The July announcement describes a professional pathway connecting the tiers; it also sets out an ambition to combine professional racing with amateur participation.
For a first-time entrant, the next step is to open the amateur event page. Find the distance you will actually race, the start procedure and the eligibility requirements. A series label alone gives you too little information to decide whether the event suits your current experience. Make those details the basis of your choice.

One date discrepancy shows why confirmation matters
World Triathlon explicitly calls its 25 September calendar a first draft. It places Tauranga’s T50 event on 13–14 November 2027, while the PTO’s July release and the current T100 event index list 20–21 November. That discrepancy remained visible in the primary sources checked for this article on 1 October.
We cannot settle that event’s final date from these conflicting listings. The useful response is to keep a provisional calendar and obtain confirmation from the event organiser before making a firm commitment. Save the page link and the date you checked it. When a later announcement arrives, you can see precisely which assumption needs updating.

Build an entry card for each shortlisted event
A compact entry card turns a big announcement into something useful. Start with one event and collect the details below from its organiser. Where information is still missing, mark it as awaiting confirmation. This prevents a polished calendar graphic from becoming a plan full of guesses.
- Race: exact amateur distance, individual or relay entry, and the age category used.
- Format: swim start, drafting rules, bike restrictions, transition procedure and course cut-offs.
- Eligibility: any licence, federation selection or qualification requirement that applies to your entry.
- Timing: confirmed race date, check-in obligations, briefing and equipment drop-off schedule.
- Status: whether entries are open, or the page is currently collecting expressions of interest.
Make the calendar fit a normal working week
Once the event details are clear, place the race beside the weeks you can realistically give it. Include work deadlines and family commitments. Choose a main target you can prepare for consistently, then consider whether another event serves a clear purpose. The growing calendar creates options; you still need a reason for each start.
For newcomers, a useful first comparison is between events you understand well enough to prepare for. Ask a local club how the start and transitions work, and use the organiser’s guide to check the answer. Familiarity with those details can make the decision easier than comparing brand names or the professional athletes expected to attend.
Your next action: verify one event
Choose one race from the new programme and complete its entry card before adding more. If a rule, date or qualification claim is unclear, send that specific question to the organiser. You will get a more useful answer than a general enquiry about whether the race is suitable for beginners. The announcement opens a new chapter for the sport; the event’s own published requirements determine the next step for your season.
